As a community partner, WHC is working with the University of Manitoba medical students to deliver comprehensive sexuality education from an anti-oppressive lens in surrounding middle and senior years schools.
The 12-hour training curriculum is designed to:
- Model Youth Allyship: Teach students how to effectively support and advocate for youth.
- Build Foundational Knowledge: Share comprehensive expertise in sexual and reproductive health education.
- Embed Equity: Teach anti-oppressive strategies for working with youth that students can later apply to other priority patient populations.
- Operationalize WHC Values: Introduce WHC’s organizational values and position statements, demonstrating how they translate into clinical and community practice.
- Encourage Self-Reflection: Examine how personal ideas, values, and experiences impact professional practice.
- Provide Practical Experience: Create structured, low-stakes opportunities for students to practice facilitation.
- Center Indigenous Perspectives: Incorporate and create dedicated opportunities for sharing Indigenous knowledge.
- Foster Professional Growth: Discuss professional connections, future opportunities, and systemic next steps.
Once the training is completed, the medical students cofacilitate Comprehensive Sexuality Education Sessions with the support of WHC Health Educators at various schools around Winnipeg.
